Wait for it…

Living a simple sweet life, and learning to wait on the Lord

The Power of the Cross July 25, 2007

Filed under: Music and Lyrics — Michelle @ 9:19 pm

We sang this song at church on Sunday and it has come to my mind every day this week.   The lyrics and music are perfectly blended to make it a powerful reminder of our hope for living…the cross of Christ.

The Power of the Cross

Oh, to see the dawn
Of the darkest day:
Christ on the road to Calvary.
Tried by sinful men,
Torn and beaten, then
Nailed to a cross of wood.

Chorus:

This, the power of the cross:
Christ became sin for us;
Took the blame, bore the wrath—
We stand forgiven at the cross.

Oh, to see the pain
Written on Your face,
Bearing the awesome weight of sin.
Every bitter thought,
Every evil deed
Crowning Your bloodstained brow.

Chorus

Now the daylight flees;
Now the ground beneath
Quakes as its Maker bows His head.
Curtain torn in two,
Dead are raised to life;
“Finished!” the victory cry.

Chorus

Oh, to see my name
Written in the wounds,
For through Your suffering I am free.
Death is crushed to death;
Life is mine to live,
Won through Your selfless love.

This, the power of the cross:
Son of God—slain for us.
What a love! What a cost!
We stand forgiven at the cross.

    I don’t think I’ve ever sung this one. I can’t grab the tune in my head but the words are grabbing my heart! I love the line “Life is mine to live, won through Your selfless love.”

    Love the words! On my way to Itunes….

  3. M Lou Says:

    I can’t get the tune either, yet I’ve heard of it. Great words. Now you two wonder-bloggers need to come up with a way for Michelle to sing a snippet for us on her blog—“sing-a-blog”!

    I have never heard this song before but I love the words – just now tried to pick a favorite line, but the whole thing is so beautifully powerful! Thank you for sharing this with the world!
